The Dixfield and Mexico police departments are participating in National Take Back Day, which aims to reduce the number of unused prescription drugs by collecting and disposing of them.

The national and statewide collection takes place on Saturday, April 30.

Dixfield police Chief Richard Pickett said last fall’s collection was so successful that this year, two sites staffed by police officers will be available. The hours for collection are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Police Department and the Town Office.

“We hope to get drugs off the street,” Pickett said.

Any prescription drug that is expired or no longer used will be accepted.

Mexico police Chief James Theriault said police officers will staff the upstairs conference room of the Town Office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s a good thing,” he said. “It gives people a place to bring (drugs) and keep them off the streets.”

At the end of the collection, agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency will gather drugs from throughout the state and dispose of them.
