Folk musician Doug Protsik will perform at the next The Oasis of Music gathering beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston.
Doug Protsik is a familiar face in the folk music scene of Maine, having performed and recorded with the Pine Hill String Band and Old Grey Goose throughout Maine and as far afield as Turkmenistan. A versatile musician and singer, Protsik plays a variety of instruments, including fiddle, mandolin, accordion and piano. His theatrical interests have brought him into extensive score writing for and improvisation on piano for silent films, carrying on the tradition he learned from the late Danny Pratt. Protsik has also directed the popular Maine Fiddle Camp for twenty years, which has had a far-reaching effect on the musical culture of Maine and well beyond its borders.
The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly thirty minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. COVID restrictions of optional mask-wearing and social distancing are observed. The concerts are held in the downstairs chapel. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
