BETHEL — Zach New poured in a game-high 23 points and Mountain Valley clamped down on defense early to down Telstar 53-33 in an MVC boys basketball season opener Friday.
New drained a pair of 3-pointers in his offensive effort. The Falcons’ (1-0) defense held the Rebels’ (0-1) offense to single-digit outputs in each of the first three quarters, including allowing just two points in the third quarter.
Brayden Stevens led the Rebels with 12 points and eight rebounds.
LEWISTON 42, PORTLAND 40: Malik Foster’s 3-pointer with less than 15 seconds remaining lifted the Blue Devils over the Bulldogs in Portland.
The game was close throughout. Lewiston led 12-10 after one quarter and 22-19 at halftime, but Portland tied it at 28-28 going into the fourth.
Eli Bigelow led the Blue Devils with nine points.
Portland’s Wani Donato was the only scorer to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points. He also had eight rebounds, and five steals.
MT. BLUE 66, MESSALONSKEE 49: Evan Sterling had a game-high 22 points to lead the Cougars (1-0) past the Eagles (0-1) in Farmington.
Zach Poisson had 18 points and Chandler Briggs chipped in with 17 points in the win.
Dan Parent led Messalonskee with 13 points, while Aidan Doran had 11 points and Sam Dube finished with 10 points.
LEAVITT 59, LINCOLN ACADEMY 42: A trio of players finished in double figures, but Nick Morin’s five blocks in the fourth were also key for the Hornets (1-0) in the KVAC win over the Eagles (0-1) in Turner.
Ben Sirois scored a game-high 18 points and Sawyer Hathaway had 16 for Leavitt. Brett Coburn put in nine of his 14 points in the fourth, and he also added 15 rebounds and five blocks.
Gabe Hagar led Lincoln with 14 points, while Tucker Stiles added 12. Their marksmanship helped the Eagles cut the deficit to one in the third quarter, but the Leavitt ended the game with a 16-0 fourth quarter.
DIRIGO 91, WISCASSET 17: Logan Timberlake dropped in 16 points to lead the Cougars (1-0) to a win over the Wolverines (0-1) in Dixfield.
Wyatt Smith and Austin Adams each had 11 points in the win for Dirigo. Nathaniel Wainwright, Tent Holman and Charlie Houghton each had 10 points.
Dawson Bush led Wiscasset with eight points.
LAKE REGION 72, POLAND 71: Noah Duprey scored 22 points to lead the Lakers to a close victory over the Knights in Poland.
Jacob Stone added 20 points, Jacob Chadbourne had 13 and Jackson Libby 11 for Lake Region.
Hunter Gibson paced Poland with 33 points. Hayden Christner scored 19.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 57, MT. ABRAM 49, OT: Manny Calder had 15 points to pace the Mustangs (1-0) in an overtime victory over the Roadrunners (0-1) in Monmouth.
Hayden Fletcher and Hunter Frost each had 11 points in the win.
Cameron Grey lead all scorers with 18 points for Mt. Abram and Peyton Mitchell had 10 points.
ST. DOMINIC 58, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 54: Freshman Jonathan Tangilamesu scored a game-high 20 points as the Saints (1-0) held off the Panthers’ (0-1) late charge for a WMC win in Auburn.
Gabe Carey added 18 points for St. Dom’s, which hadn’t beaten NYA since 2008.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 82, ST. DOMINIC 23: Charlotte Harper-Cunningham scored 15 points and Graca Bila added 14 as the Panthers (1-0) cruised past the Saints (0-1) in Yarmouth.
Madilyn Onorato and Angel Huntsman each chipped in with 11 points. NYA led 22-3 after one quarter and 45-10 at halftime.
Jessie Zimmerman scored 16 points for St. Dom’s.
MESSALONSKEE 43, MT. BLUE 33: Brennan Doran scored 11 points and hauled in 16 rebounds to spark the Eagles to the KVAC A win in Oakland.
Ashley Mullen added 19 points and four rebounds for Messalonskee (1-0).
Mt. Blue (0-1) was led by Eva Stevens with 14 points.
POLAND 39, LAKE REGION 23: Gabbi Bolduc scored 10 points to lead the Knights over the Lakers in Naples.
Emma Bunyea added eight points.
Shelby-Lynn Sheldrick paced Lake Region with 11 points.
BOYS HOCKEY
EDWARD LITTLE 3, BANGOR 0: Jack Keefe scored twice to lead the Red Eddies (1-0) to a win over the Rams (0-1) at Sawyer Ice Arena in Bangor.
Tate Morse had a goal and two assists and Campbell Cassidy had two assists. Gage Ducharme earned the shutout, making 21 saves.
Jake Hirsch was in goal for Bangor and stopped 27 shots.
BOXING
MOORE ADVANCES: Norway native and Oxford Hills graduate Amelia Moore defeated Alexandra Fernandez on Friday to advance to the USA Boxing national championship Elite Female 125-pound final. Moore, the No. 1 seed, will face second-seeded Jewry Rodriguez of Texas in Saturday’s final.
MEN’S HOCKEY
UNION 1, MAINE 1 (2OT): The Black Bears (1-11-4) let up a late goal, allowing the Dutchmen (5-8-3) to come away with a tie in Orono.
Adrien Bisson scored Maine’s goal in the first period with assist from Lynden Breen and Dawson Bruneski. Matthew Theissen made 12 saves in net.
Collin Graff tied it for Union in the third period with assist from Ryan Sidorski and Tyler Watkins. Goalie Connor Murphy turned away 51 shots.
