The Y-Wives held a Christmas party at the Kate J. Anthony House, Auburn. Wednesday and it was termed the “most successful” ever held. A week before Christmas, 22 young girls will unwrap brand-new, one-of-a-kind dresses designed exclusively for them by student tailors involved in a Service-Learning project at Bates College. Under the direction of Kathy Peters, costume shop supervisor in the Bates theater department, 10 Bates students, some of whom have never before sewn, worked for two weeks to design and sew Christmas presents for girls between the ages of six months and 14 years. The children include survivors of domestic violence who are participants in a support group run by the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project. Seven of the dresses will also be given to children chosen by Santa’s Elves, an organization which distributes Christmas gifts to families who can’t afford presents.
“The kids who are going to receive the dresses are totally excited. It’s the sweetest thing we’re having done for us this holiday season,” said Katherine Margarones, volunteer coordinator for AWAP. “Bates students are giving their time and their hearts. It shows that there are many ways to contribute.”
