Reading the article about Maine having another deadly year for pedestrians (“Maine on track for another deadly year for pedestrians,” Dec. 15), I was dismayed that although the author mentioned that drivers must be more vigilant, there was nothing about pedestrians doing so.
I believe that it really needs to be stressed that people need to be aware when crossing a street, or walking on the side of a road. I see too many people step out, especially at a crosswalk, with no care about whether a car will stop or not.
Do pedestrians have the right of way? Of course they do, but people need to take some responsibility.
If a car hits a person the driver could be at fault and very sad … but the pedestrian would be dead.
