Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is a children’s picture book with jaw-dropping artistry by award-winning illustrator Susan Jeffers (1942-2020), bringing beauty to the famous poem, “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”, by American author, Robert Frost (1874 to 1963).
The poem is about a person who is traveling through the woods while it is snowing, spending time to enjoy the beauty and peace of snow and nature. While enjoying all the serenity, he or she is reminded of obligations, “…promises to keep”, And miles to go before I sleep.”
Susan Jeffers brings amazing beauty to each line of the poem and page of this book. Using only pencil, pen, and ink, she chooses the traveler to be a gentleman with a horse-drawn sleigh accompanied by a cozy quilt. Lifelike illustrations of the forest’s animals and plants are predominately in blacks, grays, and whites. She uses a smidgen of pale colors for the travelers’ clothing, the clothing of the people he greets, and the quilt and seat in his horse-drawn sleigh.
If you look closely, you will see that the illustrator has the traveler stopping to do an activity in the snow and to do a good deed.
This beautiful picture book is not only a pleasure to read, it is an easy read; there are few words on each page and the words are printed ever so clearly. Enjoy!
