Along with having no plans to help ordinary Americans, apparently many leaders of the Republican Party have also lost touch with reality.
The Republican National Committee officially refers to the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, by angry vandals who believed the former president’s lies about the election, as “legitimate political discourse.”
This statement is an insult to the intelligence of Republican voters and to everyone who watched this attack happen. We saw no “political discourse,” but we did see a sickening amount of vandalism and screaming of threats against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other elected officials.
We saw the hangman’s noose that the group brought to “hang Mike Pence” for not illegally changing election results.
We saw the theft of laptops and other “trophies,” attacks on the police, use of bear spray, and invaders beating people with poles.
Besides injuring security workers and police, these thugs left a mountain of debris to be cleaned up and repaired. They called themselves “patriots,” when in fact they were traitors trying to take down our fairly-elected government.
No one can repair the psychological damage done to the terrorized people who were in the building during the invasion, or the sickening feeling of all of us who watched it happen on television.
This attack was not any kind of normal behavior. We can’t let lawless people like these take over our democracy through violence and lies about the presidential election.
