I wonder if I’m the only one who plays this game. Drive out Center Street checking the gas prices and drive back to the one that is the cheapest, even if only by 2 cents. Given the upward trend in the cost of gas, I’m considering signing up for a program that will save me 10 cents per gallon if I use my debit card. I’m feeling the pinch.
Lifelong Mainer and state Rep. Laurel Libby has a more straight-forward approach: Pause the 30 cents per gallon gas tax until the end of the year and give Mainers and tourists a real break. Maine could even market the suspension of the gas tax to attract tourists.
The loss of tax revenue could be offset by using some of the state’s $1.2 billion surplus for roads and bridges. Everybody wins. Mainers get relief now and transportation does not suffer in the process.
