Miracles on Maple Hill
By Virginia Sorensen
This is an old treasure that won the Newbery Medal in 1957. Despite some of the ideas about boys and girls which are outdated, this is a book that holds out hope to children in troubled families in need of nature’s healing touch.
It takes you through a year, from sugaring to sugaring, pointing out nature’s little surprises and Marly’s miracles. Growing food, hunting, helping neighbors, and hard work, are some of the steps along the way.
I hadn’t read this since I was a child myself. But I can see that some of the values it presented are a part of me. Books have a way of doing that to you.
