The Camden Public Library plans to celebrate Children’s Book Week from Monday to Sunday, May 2-8.
Every weekday, Children’s Librarian Amy Hand will portray a different children’s book character; young readers are encouraged to tune in online or stop in for a visit to see what character it will be, according to a news release from the library.
The week will feature three story times, including two outside: Outdoor Booktime for Babies at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, and Pre-School Story Time at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 5. Indoor Pre-School Story Time will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 6.

Hand also will offer crafts each weekday on YouTube and Instagram, and the week will include Tinker Tuesdays S.T.E.A.M. activities and Booktalks for tweens and teens. Maine Student Book Award book club will meet in person at 5 p.m. Monday, May 2.
“Reading is such an actionable way for young readers and their families to interact with the wider world and envision their dreams,” said Tony McKim, president and CEO of First National Bank. “First National Bank is honored to support Children’s Book Week at the Camden Public Library and to encourage the value of reading.”
Additionally, throughout May, the library will host an artwork exhibit in the Picker Room by children’s book author and illustrator Jim Arnoksy. The artwork will feature scenes of wildlife, habitat, and culture from places that he has traveled to research his books.
The public is invited to meet Arnoksy at the library’s artist reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5. For more information, visit the Kids’ Calendar at librarycamden.org.
During Children’s Book Week, the library invites those who believe in the power of reading to make a donation toward children’s library programs. Donors are welcome to give in honor of their children, grandchildren, or other favorite young readers, whose names can be placed on library bookplates.
