READFIELD — Maranacook Community High School has announced its top 10 students for the class of 2022.
Anna Erb of Readfield, the valedictorian, is the daughter of David Erb Jr., Dianna Schmidt and stepmother Kelli Corrigan. She is also the youngest sibling of Mary Erb and Chris Erb.
Erb is a three-season varsity athlete and captain for soccer, alpine skiing, and lacrosse. She joined her fellow seniors and their team in winning the first-ever girls soccer state championship in their program.
This year, Erb made the Maine State Alpine Ski Team, and competed at Easterns in New Hampshire. During the winters, she was also a youth ski instructor at the Kents Hill Ski Club.
Erb is student body president and has been a member of the Student Senate for four years. She has been the jazz band drummer for four years, a member of the National Honors Society for three years, and is a Maranacook Writing Center tutor.
Throughout high school, Erb found a niche for painting and selling custom sneakers for her friends, family, and other community members. She also enjoys other mediums in art such as fine metal working.
This fall, Erb plans to attend the University of Rhode Island to major in engineering and to continue studying art.
Sara St. Clair of Winthrop, daughter of Chris and Pat St. Clair, is salutatorian. She is a member of National Honors Society as well as Rho Kappa. She participated in the Civics Unplugged fellowship and has been a middle school mentor for the past three years. St. Clair plans to attend the University of Rhode Island as a neuroscience major in the fall.
Emily Lucas of Readfield is the daughter of Michelle and Robert Lucas. She is a three-season athlete having been on the cross-country, Nordic, and tennis all through her high school career. She has also been involved in the music program at Maranacook, playing for the school jazz band, singing in the chamber choir and district festival, and participating in the school musicals.
Along with sports and music, she likes to be well connected and involved in all school activities such as being president of Rho Kappa, and a member of the outdoors, knitting and garden club. In the fall, Lucas plans to attend college to pursue a degree in civil engineering.
McKade Wing of Manchester is the son of Roy and Allison Wing. He has participated in the Maranacook Math Team for two and a half years. The math team has helped him grow his skills and steer him down a path of problem-solving.
This fall, Wing plans on attending college in Maine to pursue his goals in the fields of mathematics and computer science.
Julia Riley of Litchfield is the daughter of John and Julie Riley, sister of Bryan Riley. She has participated in tennis all of high school, playing varsity her junior and senior year. In addition, she has been active in many Maranacook clubs such as outdoors club, Rho Kappa, and knitting club.
She is head of the Student Voice Committee on Student Senate and a member of National Honor Society. For the past three years she has been a helper for the unified basketball team. She plans on pursuing a business degree at a university in the New England area.
Zachary Berg of Mount Vernon is the son of Rebecca Kent and Eric Berg. He is a member of the cross-country team, Nordic ski team, and track and field team. He has participated in the state meet for all three sports multiple times. He was also a member of the math team, and looks forward to attending college in the fall.
Thomas Clauson of Readfield is the son of Henry and Florance Clauson, and brother of Anna Clauson. He has participated in varsity soccer, ice hockey, and alpine skiing. Playing trumpet, Clauson has been an active member of both jazz and concert bands, as well as other organizations including National Honor Society, Student Senate, Model UN, Rho Kappa Honor Society, and GAPP, earning the Maine Seal of Biliteracy in German at the end of his junior year.
During his senior year, he revitalized the dormant school newspaper, the “Tingley Brook News,” becoming its first editor-in-chief in more than a decade. Aside from this, he has also volunteered at the Jesse Lee Church and Maranacook Learn to Skate Program, referees soccer on the weekends, and works throughout the year at his family’s Christmas tree farm.
Outside of school, Clauson is an avid backpacker, sailor, and outdoorsman, having completed much of the Appalachian Trail in New England. He usually spends his summers living and working at a local summer camp or as a boat boy on an island two miles off the coast of Maine. He is looking forward to attending college in the fall to study international affairs.
Ella Schmidt of Readfield is daughter of Julie Schmidt and Rob Schmidt, and sister of Jarred Schmidt. She has participated in varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse all four years of high school. She was a captain of each of these sports her senior year. Her soccer team won two regional finals and one state championship.
She has been a member of the Student Council for four years and served as secretary for one year. She was involved with two of the school musicals, “Footloose” and “Mamma Mia.” Schmidt plans to attend the University of Rhode Island in the fall to major in nursing.
Madeleine MacDonald of Manchester is the daughter of Peter and Christine MacDonald. She attended Kents Hill her freshman and sophomore year before transferring to Maranacook. She played softball until her sophomore year, winning a MAISAD championship with Kents Hill. While at Kents Hill she was a tour guide during the school year, and also received a coaches award her freshman year for field hockey.
MacDonald has participated in field hockey year-round for eight years, being Maranacook’s captain and on the fall all-academic team her senior year. She has been an honorary page in the House of Representatives, and has volunteered at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, where she strengthened her love for animals.
MacDonald plans to pursue her academic studies at the University of Maine Orono in the pre-veterinary program and further her studies at a veterinarian school.
Claire Holman of Mount Vernon is the daughter of Rebecca Dorr and Dan Holman. She is a three-season athlete on the cross-country, Nordic skiing, and track teams. She is a writing center tutor and an avid member of the knitting and outdoor clubs. Additionally, she is an active member of the student senate, serving as treasurer and head of the sustainability committee.
Outside of school, she volunteers on the Girls Advisory Board for Hardy Girls Healthy Women, works for Stevens Farms and Greenhouses, and is an organizer for Maine Youth for Climate Justice. She was a Keller BLOOM Scholar at Bigelow laboratory, received a scholarship for certification in wilderness advanced first aid, and produced a state finalist documentary for National History Day.
Holman plans to attend either the Naval or Coast Guard academies to pursue marine science.
