A half-dozen people knew that last week’s Mystery Photo was taken at the corner of Main and Park streets in Lewiston, but not all of them knew what the word Purity was all about. The business on the other side of the threshold has been most recently occupied by a counseling service. A few knew it was the side entrance for Purity Restaurant, which operated between the 1930s and 1960s. Our winner, Deborah Blais of Lewiston, said she actually worked at the restaurant for several years. “I worked mostly on Saturdays when I was going to high school and there was a gentleman that came in every week and ordered water, toast and ketchup. I watched him mix the catchup with water to make tomato juice, and after a few weeks the owner of the store, Mr. Berube, told me to give him a glass of tomato juice and don’t charge him,” said Blais. She will receive a $20 Hannaford supermarket gift card for being picked in a random drawing from all the correct entries.
