MECHANIC FALLS — Voters Tuesday approved a proposed $3.16 million municipal budget for 2022-23.

They also elected write-in candidate Stanley “Sonny” Morgan to a three-year term on the Town Council. No candidate papers were turned in for the seat, so the race was decided by whoever received the most write-in votes. Morgan was the top vote-getter with five votes, and accepted the position on Wednesday.

For the three seats representing Mechanic Falls on the Regional School Unit 16 board of directors, voters elected incumbent Mary Martin with 189 votes, incumbent Jessica Smith with 184 votes and newcomer Andrea Winn with 163 votes. All seats are three-year terms.

Voters also elected Gary Purington and Michael Baird to fill two three-year seats on the Sanitary District board with votes of 208 and 192, respectively.

Regarding the charter amendment on the ballot, residents voted 157 to 94 to eliminate the residency requirement for town manager and eliminate the requirement that top administrative employees — fire chief, police chief, water department superintendent and public works director — reside within 10 driving miles of the town.
