Once again we are confronted with the stark reality of violence in America. In Maine we have seen “leaders” proclaiming things like “it can’t happen here because our students feel a sense of belonging.”

Wishful thinking.

Our “leaders” boast about making access to firearms easier. More guns are not the solution, they are the problem.

Banning high-velocity assault type rifles designed to kill people, and enacting sensible restrictions on firearm sales are measures supported by the vast majority of Americans.

“Open carry” is a form of intimidation and should not be legal except during appropriate activities such as hunting. It should be illegal in our towns, cities, businesses and churches.

Why can’t we learn from the failed strategies of the National Rifle Association?

We must protect our children and our nation from this senseless carnage, and vote for leaders committed to sensible gun control.
