LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center will offer a free clinical trials workshop for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. “The Cutting Edge of Cancer Treatment: Clinical Trials” will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at CMMC, 12 High St., in conference rooms A/B.
Presenters Louise Marcotte, MSS, Research Director and Courtney Jensen, MD, will answer questions and provide basic information and guidance about cancer clinical trials. Discussion will include a general overview of clinical trials, why they are important and the risks and benefits of participation.

Thomas Merton
AUBURN — The life and works of Thomas Merton, monk, writer, humanitarian, prophet and priest, will be the topic from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 24, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at St. Phillips Church on Route 4.
Merton died by accident over 40 years ago in Thailand, yet his works and influence seem current, as if written yesterday.
The presenter, Steve Drane, had two retreats and several visits to Our Lady of Gethsemani, Bardstown, Ky., where Morton lived and wrote.
A video of Merton’s life will be shown, with special handouts, and there will be a reading and discussion of excerpts from his various works.
Many of Merton’s works will be for sale as well as displays of pictures from his monastery, where The Dalai Lama recently cosponsored a conference.

Summer festival
BOWDOIN — The fourth annual Red, White and Blue Summer Fun Festival will be held on Saturday, June 25, at Bowdoin Central School, 1460 Main St., to benefit the Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross. Beginning at noon and continuing until after a spectacular fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., the event will feature games and prizes, hands-on activities, entertainment throughout the day and concessions.
The afternoon promises a true country festival atmosphere with a bouncy house, obstacle course, petting zoo, horse rides, games and a prize wall, giant croquet, a variety of fitness demonstrations. There will be true festival fare during the day, with the addition of sausage and peppers, root beer floats and ice cream served in a typical ’50s and ’60s style for the festival’s first sock hop and costume contest in the evening.
No admission will be charged at the gate, but donations of nonperishable food items will be appreciated for the Friends Helping Community Food Pantry in Bowdoin. Tickets to participate in the games and activities may be purchased at a minimal cost.

Jugglers TWO
GRAY — The popular duo of TWO, a one-hour high energy juggling show, will be presented at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Maine Wildlife Park. Combining skills in juggling, contortion, acrobatics and choreography, Maine natives and brothers Matthew and Jason Tardy demonstrate team work, creativity, goal-setting, perseverance and patience.
In addition, two ‘pesky pests’ displays for ticks and Lyme disease and for the Asian Longhorn Beetle will be available for visitors to view from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Strawberry fest
POLAND — The Poland Community Church will host its annual Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 25, on the grounds of the Poland Spring Resort, Route 26. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. there will be strawberry treats prepared in a multitude of ways, live music and other activities. All strawberries are picked locally at Chipman Farm.
Purchase a red wristband for an all-you-can-eat feast or purchase strawberry delicacies individually. Wristbands are $8 and all profits benefit the Poland Community Church. For more information call Booty Goldsberry at 998-5710.
Lakes conference
WATERVILLE — The 41st annual Maine Lakes Conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Colby College’s Diamond Building. The $35 fee includes presentations, panel discussion on regulatory changes, hands-on bug and plant workshops, exhibits, door prizes and food. Raffle tickets are available for seven prizes (need not be present to win). The conference will be hosted by Maine Congress of Lake Associations. Grange strawberries
WEST MINOT — The West Minot Grange annual strawberry festival will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 26.
Homemade ice cream, pies, sundaes, shortcakes and beverages will be available. The cost is $4. The Grange is located on Routes 119 and 124.
