POLAND — A man whose pickup was crushed by an overturned FedEx trailer truck Tuesday on Route 26 was recovering from serious injuries a day later.
The man, whose identity was not available, had been traveling westbound on Spring Water Road, which is route 122, about 9:50 a.m. and stopped at the intersection at Route 26, which is Maine Street. The driver started through the intersection, his view partially obscured by a second tractor-trailer making a right turn onto Spring Water Road, when his pickup truck collided with the FedEx truck headed north on Route 26.
The two vehicles spun into a Hyundai driven by a woman who was at a full stop on Route 26 at the intersection, pushing it back roughly 100 feet, according to Detective Nate McNally of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
The FedEx truck skidded off the road, its tires sinking into the soft ground, which caused the vehicle to roll, ultimately landing on top of the driver’s side of the Ford F-150 pickup. The driver was able to scramble out of the way and didn’t bear the full impact of the fallen FedEx, police said. However, the driver still sustained multiple injuries, including broken ribs and a concussion, and remained hospitalized Wednesday.
“He’s lucky to be alive,” McNally said.
The pickup truck driver was transported by Poland Fire Rescue to Central Maine Medical Center.
The drivers of the FedEx truck and Hyundai sustained lesser injuries, police said, and were evaluated at the scene.
The crash investigation was continuing Wednesday.
