Nick Jermain’s goal 2:40 into overtime gave the Maine Mariners a 4-3 win over the Trois-Rivières Lions in an ECHL season opener Friday night in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Grant Gabriele and Mathew Santos each got a power-play goal for Maine, and Nick Master put the Mariners ahead 3-2 early in the third. Master also set up the first two goals.

The Mariners play their home opener against the Lions at 6 p.m. Saturday.

COLLEGES

FIELD HOCKEY: Mallory Mackesy scored with 2:50 left to lift Maine to a 2-1 win over Vermont in Orono.

The Black Bears (12-4, 6-0 America East) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first quarter on a goal by Sydney Meader, assisted by Bhreagh Kennedy.

Alina Gerke of Vermont (11-4, 4-3) tied it early in the third quarter.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Katy Knoll scored twice, Maureen Murphy had three assists, and Northeastern (7-0) remained unbeaten with a 6-1 victory over Maine (4-4) in Orono.

Morgan Trimper scored for Maine in the second period.

GOLF

PGA: Jon Rahm came within an inch of holing out from 195 yards on the hardest hole at Congaree, one of many highlights in his 9-under 62 that gave him a share of the lead with Kurt Kitayama at the CJ Cup in Ridgeland, South Carolina.

Coming off a victory two weeks ago in the Spanish Open, Rahm holed a bunker shot from 60 feet on the par-4 eighth, made a 35-footer on the par-3 10th and then capped off three straight birdies with a shot into the 17th that grazed the edge of the cup.

Kitayama holed a tough bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 12th and shot a 65 to join Rahm at 11-under 131.

LPGA: Andrea Lee shot another bogey-free round of 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead in the BMW Ladies Championship in Wonju, South Korea.

Lee had two birdies on the front nine of the second round before wrapping up another impressive day with back-to-back birdies on the last two holes as she moved to 12-under 132 overall.

Overnight leader Atthaya Thitikul (71), Lilia Vu (66) and 16-year-old amateur Minsol Kim (70) shared a three-way tie for second place.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Dale Whitnell took a one-stroke lead halfway through the Mallorca Open in Palma, Spain, after shooting 8-under 63 to equal the course record set the previous day by fellow Englishman Marcus Armitage.

Ryan Fox carded a 7-under 64 and was one shot back going into the weekend. Maximilian Kieffer, Hugo Leon and Rasmus Hojgaardare were all three shots behind Whitnell.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Two-time Coach of the Year Curt Miller is the new coach of the Los Angeles Sparks after seven seasons with the Connecticut Sun.

Miller, also Connecticut’s general manager for the past six years, led the Sun to two trips to the WNBA finals, including this year when they lost to the Las Vegas Aces in four games in the best-of-five series. He was an assistant for the Sparks in 2015 before going to Connecticut.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute for Manchester United in its 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday, United Manager Erik ten Hag acknowledged Friday.

Ronaldo headed to the locker room before the final whistle in a show of dissent and has since been omitted from United’s squad for the trip to play Chelsea on Saturday.

Ten Hag held talks with Ronaldo on Friday and said the Portugal striker “remains an important part of the squad.”

However, Ten Hag said Ronaldo had to be disciplined for the sake of the culture within the team, having already been critical of the player and some of his teammates for leaving a preseason friendly against Rayo Vallecano early in July.

TENNIS

NAPOLI CUP: Top-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta was eliminated from by Miomir Kecmanovic, while home favorite and second-seeded Matteo Berrettini progressed to the semifinals in Naples, Italy.

Carreno Bustabeat Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-1 on Friday morning before losing later in the day to the fifth-seeded Kecmanovic, 7-5, 6-2.

Kecmanovic will face Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the semifinals. The other semifinal pits Berrettini against Mackenzie McDonald of the United States.
