FARMINGTON — Franklin Community Health Network will host the first Battle for Breast Cancer Tournament, a round robin benefit field hockey tournament taking place from 3:30–8:00 p.m. Friday, July 22, at Colby College in Waterville. The beneficiary is the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, a program of Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Four Central Maine high school field hockey teams are participating in the tournament: Skowhegan, Winslow, Mt. Blue and Nokomis. Team members are seeking donations from family and friends for the tournament and approaching businesses for sponsorship. Online donations can be made by visiting www.fchn.org/donate and can be directed to one of the teams playing. Special recognition will be given to the team raising the most money.
Paula Doughty, Skowhegan High School field hockey coach and a resident of Farmington, came up with the idea after talking with Gardiner and Cony field hockey coaches, Moe McNally and Krista Chase, respectively, who did a similar event in their communities with great results. “They raved how beneficial it was, not only for the community, but for the girls participating,” Doughty remarked. “It raised a lot of awareness about breast cancer.”
According to Tom Hagerstrom, FCHN fund development director, “All funds raised will be used for working women diagnosed with breast cancer at the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center who are uninsured or under-insured.”
Cost to attend the tournament is $5 per person and concessions will be available.
The Webber family created an endowed fund for the support of the breast center in 2004 in memory of Peter Webber’s wife, who passed away as the result of breast cancer in 1995.
Checks payable to FCHN can be mailed to the Fund Development Office, 111 Franklin Health Commons, Farmington, ME 04938. For more information, contact Elizabeth Richards or Julie Sexton at 779-2750.
