STRONG — Mt. Abram used a balance scoring effort to knock off perennial powerhouse Winthrop, 48-36, in an MVC boys basketball opener on Friday night.
Payton Mitchell and Cam Gray scored 10 points each to lead Mt. Abram (1-0). Kaden Pillsbury (nine points), Killian Pillsbury and Tucker Plouffe (six points each), Bryce Wilcox (five) and Dylan Thorne two) also scored for the Roadrunners.
Braden Branagen scored a game-high 12 points for Winthrop (0-1). The Ramblers also got scoring from Andrew Fay (seven points), Cole Bard and Carter Rivers (six points) and Brayden Stubbert (five).
MT. BLUE 59, MESSALONSKEE 40: Chandler Briggs poured in a game-high 19 points as the Cougars opened the season with a victory over the Eagles in Oakland.
Zach Poisson and Evan Sterling joined Briggs in double figures for Mt. Blue (1-0) with 12 points each. Zach Koban (eight points), Charles Stevens (five points) and Jayden Meader (three) also scored for the Cougars.
Center Merrick Smith led a balanced Messalonskee scoring effort with nine points. The Eagles (0-1) also got eight points from Sam Dube, seven points from Daniel Parent, six each from Drake Brunelle and Jacob Moody and four from Ty Bernier.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 60, ST. DOMINIC 56, OT: Cal Nice collected 27 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Panthers to an overtime victory over the Saints in Auburn.
Nice had five points and Moses Semuhoza scored six of his 14 in overtime. Semuhoza also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Taylor Varney scored 22 points and Jack Brocke had 12 for St. Dominic.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 75, BUCKFIELD 23: Sammy Calder scored 26 points, including 12 in the first quarter, as the Mustangs (1-0) began the season with a victory over the Bucks (0-1) in Buckfield.
Calder made three 3-pointers. Hunter Frost added 10 points and Gavin Gregor eight points to Monmouth’s win.
Gavin Charest led Buckfield with six points. Cole Brewster and Will Richardson scored five apiece.
LEWISTON 56, PORTLAND 47: Yusuf Dakane poured in 20 points to help lead the Blue Devils (1-0) to a season-opening win over the Bulldogs (0-1) in Lewiston.
Lewiston jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter. The Blue Devils’ lead was down to two points, 39-37, after three quarters, but they outscored Portland 17-10 in the fourth.
Eli Bigelow and Jibril Holloman also finished in double figures for Lewiston, with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs were led by Kevin Rugabirwa’s 15 points and 10 more from Kennedy Charles.
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 70, FREEPORT 50: Nate Hebert scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and the Patriots built a big lead in the first half against the Falcons in Freeport.
Michael Ryan added 14 points and Max Kenney had 13. Gray-New Gloucester led 24-9 after one quarter and 44-16 at halftime.
Connor Slocum led Freeport with 16 points, while JT Pound scored 12 points and Conner Smith had 11, including three 3-pointers.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
MOUNTAIN VALLEY 47, TELSTAR 18: Brooke Brown, Malorie Bourret and Maddie Dow each scored 11 points to lead the Falcons (1-0) to a season-opening win over the Rebels (0-1) in Bethel.
Brown and Bourret also finished with six steals apiece, and Dow pulled down seven rebounds.
Mogan Zetts led Telstar with 10 points.
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 39, FREEPORT 27: Izzy Morelli led a balanced offense with 12 points as the Patriots topped the Falcons in Gray.
Emily Groves paced Freeport with 11 points.
MT. BLUE 41, MESSALONSKEE 37: Bailey Farnham and Kensley Malcom each scored 10 points in the Cougars’ victory over the Eagles in Farmington.
Caitlyn Burke added nine points and pulled down nine rebounds for Mt. Blue, while KK Daggett scored eight and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Eagles’ Ashley Mulin scored a game-high 14 points.
MONMOUTH ACADEMY 58, BUCKFIELD 19: Freshman Kaitlyn Frost and senior Holly Hunt led the Mustangs (1-0) to a season-opening victory over the Bucks (0-1) in Monmouth.
Frost and Hunt each made eight field goals, including a 3-pointer. Frost also hit three free throws to finish with 20 points and Hunt made one foul shot to reach 18 points. Reese Beaudoin added seven points to Monmouth’s victory.
Freshman Searae Devoe led Buckfield with 11 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers.
LEAVITT 47, LINCOLN ACADEMY 30: Caitlyn McCoy scored 14 points and teammates Leni Beutler and Gabby Smith each scored nine points as the Hornets dismissed the Eagles in Turner.
Mariam DeLisle and Reegan Dunican each scored eight points for Lincoln.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 76, ST. DOMINIC 16: Angel Huntsman had a triple-double of 13 points, 12 steals and 11 assists as the Panthers trounced the Saints in Auburn.
Sarah English scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds for NYA. Graca Vila also had 12 points and Charlotte Harper-Cunningham finished with 10.
Charli Apodaca scored nine points for St. Dominic.
