Gender Queer: A Memoir
By Maia Kobabe
Maia felt it would help so much to have a name that was less gender-binary, “I wish I had ANY gender-neutral name.” They started feeling out of place almost as soon as they entered school. They found that they were conflicted or feeling misgendered with everyday words. Here’s where I think it’s important to try putting yourself in Maia’s shoes. They said that they were never comfortable wearing ‘girly’ clothes.
Maia’s writing may speak to you, if you’re wondering about your own gender, and may be helpful to you.
I am a big fan of the way Maia Kobabe put themself out there in this memoir. I am so glad that I took the time to read this book. I didn’t think I’d be a graphic novel fan, but it works really well here, I like it more than I thought I would. Spoiler alert: it’s not about sex! This is simply the story of a kid trying to feel comfortable and confident in who they are. I wish that for my own kids and all kids.
This book may not be for you. If you don’t like it, stop reading it.
