Crane operator Derrick Plummer lifts a 1960s-era tank into place Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Park beside Main Street in Lewiston. American Legion Post 22 in Lewiston acquired the M60A3 tank from American Legion Post 5 in Waterville where it sat for 22 years in a church parking lot, Lewiston Post Cmdr. Jerry DeWitt said. Cote Crane of Auburn donated about $14,000 worth of services to get the 90,000-pound tank to its new home, Foreman Brian Bosse said. World War II veteran Del Gendron donated $3,000 to have the tank hauled to Lewiston because the truck intended to move the tank could not handle the weight so Cote Crane used one of its trucks. “They saved our bacon,” DeWitt said. Bosse said it is the first battle tank he has lifted. “I have moved a lot of tanks but they are usually round,” he said. DeWitt said there is a time capsule in the tank that L&A Veterans Council members plan to add to in the spring. Daryn Slover/Sun Journal
