RUMFORD — Nora McCourt and Henri McCourt paced the Mt. Blue ski teams to the top of the leaderboard after the first day of the KVAC and MVC Nordic skiing championships Tuesday at Black Mountain.

Nora McCourt won the KVAC girls freestyle title, while Henri McCourt placed second behind Leavitt’s Logan Ouellette in the boys race.

Ruth White led a group of Orono skiers who placed first through fourth in the MVC girls freestyle race, helping the Red Riots take a commanding lead.

Mt. Abram’s Jeffrey Warnock won the MVC boys freestyle championship and teammate Carter Butterfield finished third, but three top-10 finishes by Orono put it six points ahead of the Roadrunners, 777 to 771.

The KVAC and MVC championships conclude Saturday with the classical pursuit races at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

KVAC GIRLS

The Mt. Blue girls claimed six top-10 finishes, including five of the top six. Finishing behind Nora McCourt — who finished the 5-kilometer freestyle mass start race in 14 minutes, 48 seconds — in second place in was teammate Bridget Reusch (14:59.0). Brunswick’s Maeve Woodruff was third, followed by a trio of Cougars: Moriah Reusch, Maya Kellett and Natalie McCarthy. Mt. Blue’s other top-10 finisher was Delia Colello, who placed 10th.

Edward Little’s Kat Garcia came in seventh, while Maranacook’s Olympia Farrell and Elsa Bergdahl finished eight and ninth, respectively.

The Mt. Blue girls finished the day with 792 points. Leavitt was second with 753. The Hornets didn’t have any skier place in the top 10, but they had seven of the next 11 finishers: Ali Dening took 12th, Iris Petrin 13th, Jade Haylock 14th, Abby Marston 17th, Haley Marston 18th, Ashley Roy 20th and Heather Mousseau 21st.

Each team’s first four finishers count towards its team score.

Maranacook (738) is in third place, followed by Camden Hills (721), Oxford Hills (534), Brunswick (378), Bangor (351) and Edward Little (194).

Meredith Harthorne was Oxford Hills’ top finisher, coming in 16th.

KVAC BOYS

Ouellette won the KVAC boys freestyle championship with a time of 12:37.2, more than four seconds ahead of Henri McCourt (12:41.6). Edward Little’s Orrin Slover placed third (13:02.6).

The Mt. Blue boys, who tallied 782 points, had three other skiers finish in the top 10: Grayson Hoeft fifth, Elias Bartlett seventh and Luke Doscinski eighth.

Led by Ouellette, the Leavitt boys are in second with 770 points. Jacob Dening placed ninth, Gabe Durazo came in 10th and Aidan Lind was 13th.

Maranacook (745) is third, led by Wyatt Stevenson’s fourth-place showing and Silas Bartol’s sixth-place finish. Oxford Hills (727) is fourth, paced by Cameron Sherbinski and Cody Roy, who took 11th and 15th, respectively.

Edward Little (555) is fifth, Brunswick (544) sits sixth and Camden Hills (525) is seventh.

MVC BOYS

Warnock claimed the MVC boys title with a time of 14:10.8. Spruce Mountain’s Samuel Geissinger (15:36.6) came in second and Butterfield (16:06.2) third.

The next three finishers were from Orono: Liam Waring in fourth, Ben Aresenault in fifth and Will Stoner in sixth.

Mt. Abram’s Lyle Hering joined Warnock and Butterfield in the top ten with a seventh-place finish.

Other top-10 finishers were Telstar’s Kayan Degruttola (eighth), Mountain Valley’s David Packard (ninth) and Spruce Mountain’s Mathew Pepe (10th).

Spruce Mountain, which also had an 11th-place finish by Owen Schwab and a 14th-place finish by Daniel Wilson, is in third place with 767 points. Mountain Valley (740) is fourth, Dirigo (362) fifth, Telstar (193) sixth and Winthrop (182) seventh.

Zack Webster was Dirigo’s highest finisher, coming in 16th, and Joseph Szakas came in 20th to lead Winthrop.

MVC GIRLS

Ruth White won the MVC girls crown with a time of 15:06.9. She was followed by teammates Clara White, Megan Gerbi and Maureen Tyne, who finished second through fourth.

Old Town’s Lida Kanoti came in fifth, followed by Telstar’s Ella Akers, Winthrop’s Phoebe Dow, Mountain Valley’s Brooke Buotte, Spruce Mountain’s Hannah Perkins and, in 10th, Winthrop’s Sophie Blanco.

Because there were only 15 finishers (out of 19 skiers) in the girls race, Orono, with 794 points, has a significant lead. Winthrop is second with 385, then Spruce Mountain (379), Dirigo (376), Old Town (196), Telstar (195) and Mountain Valley (193).
