Five Girl Scouts from A Place for Girls Troops 4055 and 4127 in Lewiston attended a Jewelry Merit Badge training program last month at Day’s Jewelers in Auburn.

The girls spent the afternoon touring the sales floor, learning how to clean jewelry, participating in a scavenger hunt, and using real tools to make their own necklaces, according to a news release from Helen Ruhlin with Girls Scouts of Maine.

The Girl Scouts of Maine has partnered with jeweler company since 2017 to offer the badge training program across all store locations in the state. Through the training, girls get the opportunity to learn about the processes within the jewelry industry while gaining insight into the operational side of a New England-based, employee-owned business.

“Community engagement is a major focal point of our company culture at Day’s Jewelers. For me personally, I really value creating meaningful jewelry experiences for the next generation,” said Vanessa Phipps, store manager of the Auburn store.

“Back when I was a Junior Girl Scout, I wish I had the experience to learn about the jewelry industry as a potential career field, I might have started on my professional journey a lot sooner than I did. I want the girls to see themselves joining the Day’s Team in the future,” said Phipps.

Troop Leader Morgan Reilly says for most girls that participated, the training was their first Girl Scout field trip within the community.

“One of my biggest takeaways from the program as a leader was getting to watch the girls interact with professionals in the community and apply the social skills we have been working on,” said Reilly.
