The War that Saved my Life
By Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Ada, whose mother never let her out of the house because she was ashamed of her daughter’s disability, sees an opportunity to sneak out. Her brother James is sent to live in the country away from London, and Ada manages to get out of the house with him.
Their mother is neglectful and leaves them to fend for themselves. She could have done more to help Ada with her disability, but chose not to, and to simply keep her locked inside the house instead.
When Ada and James experience a loving home with Susan for the first time, they are so happy and learn things they never would have before. But will it last? Will their mother decide they must be with her for all the wrong reasons?
