Housing costs too much here in Lewiston. I don’t really know why.
I know a couple who are losing their home because of increased rent. I’ve seen someone crying on the sidewalk because they can’t afford rent anymore and will likely become homeless again. I know a couple who sleep in a tent in the woods because of a lack of family shelters here.
Short of a complete socio-economic overhaul, I do not have any immediate solutions to this long-standing, complex problem. The fact remains: humans need shelter.
Criminalizing sleeping in public parks does nothing to make things any better.
Certain City Council members should really stop dragging their heels.
