Civil War info

HEBRON — The Hebron Historical Society will host Richard and Marcia Cylik and their presentation of the personal aspects of the Civil War soldier at their Tuesday, Aug. 23, meeting. The Cyliks will do their presentation in period garb. Mr. Cylik is a re-enactor as a member of Company A, 3rd Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry. The presentation will be at the Hebron Town office at 7 p.m., following a short meeting. The public is invited.

Babysitting course

AUBURN — The YMCA will offer an ARC Babysitting Course from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26.

A good babysitter successfully uses leadership, basic care, safety and safe play, and first aid. This course has been designed around these four major themes. The course fees are $65 for Y members and $75 for nonmembers, and participants must be 11-15 years of age. Participants should also bring a snack, beverage and lunch, as they will be at the Y for the entire training.

Ballin for cancer

AUBURN — Turner’s Classic will present “Ballin For Breast Cancer,” a co-ed three on three basketball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27, at “The Gully” on Chestnut Street. The cost is $25 per player with a $300 cash prize to the winner.

Shakers, natives

NEW GLOUCESTER — The third annual Maine Native American Summer Market and Demonstration will be held at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

This event is a unique blending of two of Maine’s most unique and continuing traditions – that of the Maine Shakers and Maine’s four Native American tribes. The 20 featured artists are among the finest and most renowned Penobscot, Maliseet, Micmac and Passamaquoddy artisans. This gathering represents decades of tradition, and includes master basketmakers, apprentices and multiple generations of family members.

There will be hand-woven ash-splint and sweetgrass baskets, traditional etched birch bark vessels, stone sculptures, woodcarvings, cedar flutes and jewelry for sale, as well as demonstrations and traditional storytelling. NEW GLOUCESTER — The annual, free “Open Range Day” will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Royal River Rod and Gun Club, Fish Hatchery Road. Open Range Day gives the public the chance to check out the 35-yard and 100-yard shooting ranges, meet and talk to members, and learn about the safety, education and community programs sponsored by the club.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a firearm or two and try the ranges. Members also invite people who have never handled a firearm before. Members come from a broad spectrum of experience including Maine DIFW, law enforcement and military as well as casual target shooters and fishing enthusiasts.
