NORWAY — A house in Lovell was destroyed by fire, wires were still down across many roads, at least three houses in Oxford were damaged by falling trees, and horses were being rescued from a field in Rumford as morning dawned in Oxford County in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

Meanwhile school officials called off the first day of school at the Oxford Hills School District as residents worked on cleaning up debris and repairing damages.

“We’re still taking a lot of calls, “ said Jim Miclon, director of Oxford County regional communications center early Monday morning. “It’s been crazy.”

A home was leveled by fire shortly after 6 a.m. at 70 West Stoneham Road in Lovell. Miclon said the homeowner reported waking up and finding the house filled with smoke. Everyone had evacuated safely but the house was a total loss, Miclon said.

Rescue workers in Oxford said they helped two families escape from houses where trees had fallen damaging roofs Sunday on Main Street and School House Road.

Two residents went to the American Legion shelter in Oxford, according to Allison Hill and Teresa Inman at the Oxford County Emergency Management Agency headquarters in Paris.

Flooding was a serious problem along the Androscoggin River, its tributaries and on the Saco River as well, Miclon said.
