Jacob Nathan Cash

POLAND – Jacob Nathan Cash, 76, of Poland passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston. Born on May 31, 1947 in Casco, he was the son of David and Janice (Malier) Cash.

Jacob graduated from Casco High School in 1965, where he was a two-sport athlete, playing both baseball and basketball. Soon after graduating, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Vietnam War as a sergeant and loadmaster from 1965 to 1969.

Upon his honorable discharge in 1969, he moved to Tennessee where he held various jobs, including raising and training race horses. He moved back to Maine in the early 1970s and on April 19, 1975 he married his wife, Sheila Crowley, and they have shared 48 happy years together.

He returned to his boyhood hobby of raising and training steers and showing them at county fairs. In 1983, they welcomed their daughter, Kimberly.

He loved spending time with his animals and participated in showing steer and oxen for over 60 years. He especially enjoyed having his daughter join him at the fairs and share in his love for animals.

Jacob was a member of the New England Ox Teamsters Association for several decades and served as president of the club from 2010-2013. He also enjoyed working with, and fostering, youth agriculture programs through his service as a 4-H leader. He served as the 4-H working steer superintendent at the Fryeburg Fair for many years over the past two decades. He will be missed by his fellow teamsters and fair family.

He worked at Parker Hannifin in Portland for 31 years, retiring in 2008.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila, and daughter, Kimberly and her husband Matthew Thibault of Auburn. Also surviving are his sisters, Elizabeth Knight of Casco and Madeline Greenleaf of Methuen, Mass., his sister-in-law, Beverly Crowley, of Poland; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Edith Frank and Beatrice MacDonald.

A funeral service celebrating Jacob’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 10, 2023 in the Expo Center at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 10 a.m. until the start of the service. Private family interment will be at the Poland Pine Grove Cemetery.
