HEBRON — Michael Davis of the Bridgton Historical Society will describe this story. Though Maine is now the only state in the continental US without native venomous snakes, it didn’t used to be that way, and the eradication of the timber rattlesnake here is the product of a widespread and determined effort by our forefathers spanning over a century of labor to drive the snakes from Maine. Hear exciting stories of the olden days and meet the varied cast of characters responsible for the extermination; from sturdy pioneer woodsmen to eccentric doctors, wily snake oil salesmen, and superstitious squires, as together they worked to change Maine’s natural environment forever. The event will take place Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Hebron town Office. Open to the public. Refreshments served.
