A first-quarter touchdown and a late-game stop on a 2-point conversion were enough for Dirigo to claim a 7-6 win over Jay on Sept. 25, 2010. Spencer Ross ran for a 59-yard touchdown and Nelson Pepin kicked the extra point to put the Cougars up 7-0 with a minute left in the first quarter. The Jay defense shut down Dirigo in the second half, allowing only two first downs on five drives, but the Tigers offense didn’t score until Zach Bonnevie threw a 17-yard TD on fourth down to Kyle Storer with 1:38 remaining in the game. Jay coach Mark Bonnevie said that the Tigers felt they deserved to win — noting that they had dominated the second half — and the team all wanted to go for the 2-point conversion and an 8-7 lead rather than settle for a tie. Zach Bonnevie again dropped back to pass on the conversion, but this time his pass was deflected by Ross (and nearly into the hands of a Jay player).

Livermore Falls ran right at Lisbon, and led by Jason Allen the Andies defeated the Greyhounds 21-6 on Sept. 23, 1995. Allen touched the ball on nearly 60% of Livermore Falls’ plays and ran for 129 yards on 29 carries. He also excelled on defense, teaming with Jason Timberlake and Josh Moody at linebacker to hold previously undefeated Lisbon to 99 yards of total offense. That same day, Leavitt, on its way to a Class B state title, rolled through Kennebunk 40-8. Jim Ray ran for 149 yards and four TDs, Matt Additon connected with Drew Leavitt on two touchdown passes and Joe McLean had a pair of quarterback sacks.

Former Edward Little athlete and freshman team coach and future Edward Little head coach Gene Keene was on the receiving end of a Red Eddies beatdown on Sept. 18, 1987. Keene was the head coach of the Noble Knights, who traveled to Walton Field and lost 27-0. Edward Little running back Lou Talarico racked up 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Another future Edward Little coach, Dave Sterling, recovered a fumble and made a key reception on the Red Eddies’ first scoring drive. Like this year, in 1987, Noble had moved up from Class B to Class A.

Edward Little entered the week looking like a state championship contender but was upset by Westbrook, 26-21, on Sept. 19, 1975. The Red Eddies were without top running back Jeff Brissette, who injured his shoulder during practice, and fell behind 18-0 in the first half. Larry Baril made several big plays and teamed with Jim and John Hersom to get Edward Little back in the game, but Westbrook’s Jim Foley all but put the game away when he was almost stopped on third down but reversed direction and raced for a 57-yard touchdown. Foley also had three TD runs in the first half.
Jay, which defeated Madison 7-2, was the only area winner on Friday. Lewiston lost to Portland 12-0 on Saturday, but many other area squads fared better. Mt. Blue remained unbeaten with a 28-8 win over Mt. Ararat, Winthrop beat Mt. Abram 39-14, Livermore Falls downed Leavitt 36-9, Lisbon beat Monmouth 32-6 and Telstar blanked Madison 8-0.
