AUBURN — Fire Prevention Week, scheduled for Sunday to Saturday, Oct. 8-14, has a theme this year of “Cooking Safety Starts with YOU.”
The Auburn Fire Department reminds everyone to cook safely with the following safety tips:
• Always stay in the kitchen while frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove.
• Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
• Have a “kid and pet-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove or grill, and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
• Be alert! If you are sleepy, have consumed alcohol or medication, please don’t use the stove or stovetop.
• If you have a fire on the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
• For an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed.
As always, if you have a fire, call 9-1-1 so that the fire department can assist and verify that the fire has been completely extinguished.
