POLAND — The placement of future sixth graders in Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland will be considered by Regional School Unit 16 directors at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Poland Regional High School Library.
Directors are studying information from the district’s Futures Task Force on whether the district should keep all three elementary schools or close Minot Consolidated School and reconfigure the remaining two in Poland and Mechanic Falls.
The idea of incorporating the sixth grade into the Bruce Whittier Middle School in Poland to accommodate all other elementary school students into two elementary schools had been discussed by the task force.
In a nonbinding informational poll, task force members voted down the option of relocating the sixth grade to the middle school, 17-4, but decided directors should have the final say.
The task force recommended the issue be brought up at Monday’s meeting when other information on the positives and negatives of the two options will be presented.
A final decision could come before the end of the year.
RSU 16 directors will host community forums at Poland Regional High School on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 8-9:30 a.m. and from 6-7:30 p.m. on the future of elementary education in the district. The morning session will be held in the library while the evening forum will be in the cafeteria.
