Rumford won its third consecutive game with three third-quarter scores to take down Cony 18-7 on Oct. 17, 1975. Larry White scored the Panthers’ first two touchdowns on 9- and 8-yard runs, which came within a short time frame things to a Cony fumble recovered by Rumford’s Joe Mahar. Matt Kaubris’ passing to Doug Roberts helped set up White’s first score, and the duo connected for the third TD on a fourth-and-goal from the two. That same day, Mexico shut down Hall-Dale 20-8. James Bouthot returned a punt 50 yards for the Pintos’ first score, and later in the second period Bouthot scored on a 50-yard run. George McCrillis scored the final TD on a 5-yard run. Finally, Mt. Blue’s Dave Stevens scored two touchdowns and kicked six extra points as the Cougars rolled past Oxford Hills 42-13.

Edward Little remained unbeaten with a 16-6 win over Stephens of Rumford on Oct. 15, 1965. The Red Eddies’ first score came on the first play of the second quarter when Paul Pelletier, on a halfback option, threw to Gene Benner, who ran the rest of the way to the end zone for a 7-0 lead. A 14-yard punt early in the third quarter set up Edward Little at the Panthers’ 37. The Red Eddies, again, scored quickly, as Denny Lawler ran in a score from 34 yards out on their second play. Stephens’s lone touchdown was on a Bill Blanchard 2-yard run on fourth down. Edward Little added a safety when Tom Benner took down Dick Prinn in the end zone in the final minute. Lewiston also improved to 5-0 the following day with a 26-6 win over Deering. The Blue Devils scored all of their points on first-half touchdown runs — three by Bill Johnson and the fourth by Mike Parkin. That same day, Jim Dowe scored two TDs in Leavitt’s 12-6 win over Monmouth.

Lewiston trailed by a touchdown, but, as the Lewiston Daily Journal wrote, “Pulled a defeat out of the fire and turned it into a 14-7 victory,” on Oct. 15, 1932. Cheverus went ahead in the final minutes of the second quarter on a pass from Murphy (the area newspapers didn’t list the first names of every player) to Dick Greenwood. A pass by Bill Tewhey to Danny Harkins was Lewiston’s first touchdown. On the extra point, a pass from Johnny Dudzic to Jimmy McCarthy evened the game. In the fourth quarter, the Blue Streaks blocked a punt into the end zone, and Devereaux, “the stocky scrappy Lewiston freshman fell on it for a touchdown and the fans went hoarse as they cut loose.” A Dudzic-to-McCarthy pass for the extra point made it 14-7. That same day, Edward Little lost to Cony, which was one of the state’s best teams that season. Rumford, Farmington and South Paris blanked their opponents, while Monmouth and Hebron were shut out.

Edward Little pulled off a stunner by playing heavily favored Lewiston to a 0-0 tie on Oc.t 18, 1924. It was the first time in five years that Lewiston didn’t carry “off the bacon in the inter-city series,” as the Lewiston Evening Journal wrote. The unfortunately nicknamed Midget Smith recovered a pair of fumbles for Edward Little, including one on a muffed punt return by Lewiston’s Ted Weber that set up the Eddies’ best scoring chance late in the game. Edward Little reached the Lewiston 10-yard line but eventually was pushed out of position for a go-ahead drop-kick attempt, and then a forward pass was knocked down by Lewiston’s Leighton (no first name included) on the final play of the game.
