100 Years Ago: 1923
The rain came just in time to help out the water situation on the farms in Maine. Many wells had gone dry and water for all purposes was being hauled from springs and ponds and streams. Many had taken advantage of the dryness to dig new wells, as it was believed that if water was found in this dry time it would make a good supply. It looks now as if the ground will close up for winter with a good supply of water. Ground, except the old ground, was too dry for plowing. although the sulky plow and the tractor plow are not bothered so much as the walking plow by dry ground. Those having apples to pick will probably get started on the work at once as it is predicted that a cold snap is due after the rain.
50 Years Ago: 1973
(Sun Journal photo) Work on the new Central Maine Mall is progressing rapidly as anyone who drives by the site on Lisbon Street, near East Avenue, can plainly see. In the past several weeks, work crews have progressed rapidly, transforming empty walls into nearly completed buildings. While the outside is taking on a new look, the inside is also receiving its finishing touches. In the above photo, workmen are shown busily installing the floor and ceiling at the new Shaw’s Supermarket which is included in the mall complex. It is expected that the new store will be opened early in November.
25 Years Ago: 1998
The YWCA will hold a Box Car Lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with Barbara Randall as hostess. The program will be on Newport, R.I. Fee is $3 for members, $5 for others.
