SABATTUS — Two people and a pair of dogs escaped without serious injury Wednesday afternoon when a pickup truck went off the road, rolled and landed in Sabattus Pond.

Sabattus fire crews were called at about 1:15 p.m. to the area of 469 Sabattus Road for a report of a truck in the water with people and dogs trapped inside.

Fire Lt. Austin Gayton arrived at the scene within minutes, accompanied by firefighters Dustin Larochelle and Zac Mitchell. The crew immediately donned cold weather gear and carried battery powered extrication equipment down to the shore line, according to acting Fire Chief Robert Gayton.

Lt. Austin popped the truck door open while the other firefighters assisted the two human occupants and two dogs still inside the pickup. The two people in the truck escaped with minor injuries and the dogs were not hurt at all, Chief Gayton said.

He added that full-time shifts, newly instituted at the Sabattus Fire Department, helped crews respond quickly to the scene.

“I’d just like to stress the importance of daytime staffing within our fire department,” the chief said. “Within minutes, we had three well trained firefighters on the scene, ready to go to work, and providing the best care for all involved. These crews make me proud, every single day.”
