One area college has revamped its schedule and the other two are working on plans in response to Wednesday’s mass shooting in Lewiston.
Bates College and the University of Maine at Farmington will have more definitive plans Friday.
Central Maine Community College was planning to host the Yankee Small College Conference women’s soccer championships at its Auburn campus Saturday and Sunday. The YSCC announced Thursday that the tournament, as well as the men’s soccer tourney hosted in Albany, New York, will be moved to next week.
“In light of recent tragic events in the Lewiston area and the ongoing lockdown, the YSCC held a meeting this morning with athletic directors, the executive board, and commissioner,” the conference posted on social media. “We’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the YSCC men’s and women’s soccer championships to November 4-5.”
The YSCC added that the women’s championship location might be changed “based on updates.”
Bates College, coming off its best regular season in program history, is slated to host Bowdoin in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC field hockey tournament and Williams for a regular season football game Saturday. The volleyball team currently has road games in Massachusetts on Friday and Saturday, and the men’s and women’s cross country teams are supposed to compete in the NESCAC championships in Amherst, Massachusetts, on Saturday.
The Sun Journal has been told that Bates will send out a news release Friday morning that contains details about this weekend’s contests.
UMaine-Farmington athletic director Jamie Beaudoin said that the school will work with the University of Maine System and the North Atlantic Conference on Friday to determine how to proceed.
“We are closely monitoring the situation with UMS and the NAC,” Beaudoin said in an email to the Sun Journal on Thursday afternoon. “As of right now all our events are scheduled to occur as scheduled.
“We have meetings scheduled tomorrow with potential updates.”
The Beavers’ field hockey and men’s soccer teams are scheduled to compete in the North Atlantic Conference championships on Saturday in Bangor. The women’s soccer team is slated to begin the conference tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while the men’s and women’s cross country teams are supposed to run in the NAC championships in Presque Isle.
