AUBURN — Bryant & Stratton at Albany spent most of the game chipping away Central Maine Community College’s lead, but the Mustangs scored the final six points to win 78-75 in a women’s basketball contest Friday.
CMCC (2-0) led by 11 after one quarter and its lead reached as high as 17 points in the second quarter. The Bobcats (0-1) cut their deficit to eight by halftime and to four at the end of the third quarter.
Bryant & Stratton took the lead, 72-71, after a pair of free throws by Hasjina Gaddy, and went up 75-72 when Mickia Freeney hit a 3-pointer with 3:12 remaining in the game.
Chantel Ouellette (four points) scored a basket to get the Mustangs within one point, then Ella Lavinge’s layup put CMCC up 76-75 with 2:23 left, and Rosa Prieto made a layup nine seconds later to make it 78-75.
Prieto and Marney Rees paced CMCC with 12 points each. Lavigne added 11 and Zoe Bedford had nine. Lavigne also pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds (eight offensive) and made four steals. Destiny Mora Lopez grabbed 10 rebounds (four offensive) and blocked two shots.
The Mustangs forced 32 turnovers but committed 27.
Bryant & Stratton’s Hasjina Gaddy led all scorers with 24 points. She made 7 of 11 shots from the field and 10 of 12 at the free-throw line. Janessa Iyana Jones scored 16, Feeney added 15 and Fatima Bakayoko contributed 14.
