PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A black bear has been shot and killed in Maine’s largest city after being spotted in a tree in a residential neighborhood.
Maine wardens shot and killed the bear at about 7 a.m. Friday in the woods off Veranda Street in Portland.
Portland police Lt. Jim Sweatt told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/qwZohv ) the bear was seen in a tree in a nearby residential area on Oregon Street before it climbed down and ran off.
Sweatt said wardens initially tried to tranquilize the bear, without success.
