DIXFIELD — The first of three furlough days for employees of Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 takes place Friday, Oct. 7.
That means there’s no school for students or any of the 580 staff on that day. Two other unpaid furlough days are scheduled for March 23 and April 13.
The cost-cutting measure was taken to maintain the district’s 2011-12 operating budget of $34.2 million. With the unpaid furlough days, Superintendent Tom Ward said the district will save about $336,000.
However, teachers lost all but one of their staff development workshop days as a result. Staff development continues, however, on late-arrival Wednesday mornings when students begin classes about an hour later than normal.
