Hospice training
LEWISTON – Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice will offer a four-hour training for Hospice House Greeters and Office Volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Lewiston office on 15 Strawberry Ave.
Hospice House greeters answer phones and greet people as they enter the Hospice House on 237 Stetson Road in Auburn. Office volunteers assist with data entry, filing, mailings, making and receiving phone calls, and other special projects as assigned.

Recycle day
AUBURN — Rotary’s community recycle day will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Stratham Tire back parking lot, 150 Center St.
TVs, DVD players, VCRs, radios, stereos, microwaves, computers, keyboards, computer mouse, scanners, printers, batteries, cell phones, game consoles, documents that are to be securely shredded and tires are all items that can be brought in and recycled. Proceeds benefit the orphanages being visited by the Rotary Work Teams that are traveling to Haiti in January. Donations are welcome.
Genealogy Society
AUBURN — The Maine Franco-American Genealogical Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the pursuit of family research, will host an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the new location at 217 Turner St., above Fortin Funeral Home.

Schooner craft fair
AUBURN — The third annual Schooner Estates craft fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in the Village Green.

Knit-in, donations
FREEPORT — The fourth Chain Stitch Event Knit-in will take place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St.
The group will be knitting, crocheting and sewing projects for donation to Freeport Community Services Holiday Helpline. There will be refreshments, free patterns and creative support.
For those who cannot join the Knit-In, there will be drop boxes at the Freeport Community Center and Freeport Community Library throughout the month to collect handmade donations.
Masonic open house
MECHANIC FALLS — An Apple Festival and open house will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Tyrian Masonic Lodge, 474 South Main St. (Route 11). There will be no charge; donations only. Open to the public. Information will be available on Freemasonry.
Society open house
MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society will hold its monthly open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.
The society recently received scrapbooks of holiday and greeting cards dating from the 1920s through 1940s as well as advertising cards from area businesses. Also available for reading will be issues of the Androscoggin Post, a weekly newspaper which covered the area’s political and community news from the 1970s. The society welcomes any article of interest pertaining to Mechanic Falls.
Historical Society
NEW GLOUCESTER — The New Gloucester Historical Society will have a booth at the New Gloucester Community Fair on Saturday, Oct. 15, New Gloucester Fairgrounds, Bald Hill Road. All veterans with ties to New Gloucester are asked to come to the booth and add their names to the Honor Roll that the society has started.
Turner band
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — The Portsmouth High School Clipper Marching Band will host a Maine Band Directors’ Association Marching Band Show at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, on the Portsmouth High School football field, 50 Andrew Jarvis Drive.
Seven high school marching bands from Central and Southern Maine including Leavitt, Westbrook, South Portland, Old Orchard, Wells, Sanford and Marshwood will join Portsmouth in a quest for a rating of five stars in nine different performance categories.

Class of 1981
TURNER — The Leavitt High School Class of 1981 will host a 30-year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Turner Highlands Restaurant. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will begin at 6 p.m. and music will be provided by 1981 classmate Craig Poland.
The class also invites classes before and after to come share memories of yesterday and revisit with old friends. Cost per person is $20/$10 after 8 p.m. for guests. Everyone welcome.
