PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine Today Media newspapers are urging voters to approve one casino question on the Nov., 8 ballot, but defeat the other.

Matching editorials appearing in the Maine Sunday Telegram, Kennebec Journal of Augusta and Central Maine Morning Sentinel of Waterville say voters should pass Question 2, which would allow racinos in Biddeford and Washington County.

The newspapers and their websites say the importance of harness racing as a contributor to Maine’s economy and valued element of the state’s cultural and social structure is too often overlooked. They dismiss arguments by opponents as “narrow-minded” and “frequently misleading.”

But Maine Today Media says voters should reject Question 3, which would allow a casino in downtown Lewiston. It says the allure of quick gambling money should not divert Lewiston from real progress it’s made revitalizing itself.
