AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — New campaign finance reports show forces seeking a yes vote to repeal Maine’s new voter registration law are outspending their opponents 17-1.
Reports show supporters of a yes vote on Question 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot spent $412,162 through Oct. 25, when the latest reporting period ended. Their opponents spent a total of $24,459.
The yes campaign’s biggest political action committee is Protect Maine Votes, whose major contributors include financier Donald Sussman and unions. The Maine Republican Party, some county GOP organizations and the Maine Heritage Policy Center donated to the opposing campaign.
A yes vote repeals a new state law that requires voters to register at least two business days before an election. Passage would reinstate a law that allows registration up to and including Election Day.
