JOHNSON MOUNTAIN TOWNSHIP, Maine (AP) — Police say a Mount Vernon woman has been injured after her car struck an injured moose that had already been hit by another vehicle.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office says 70-year-old Phoebe Payne was driving south on U.S. Route 201 in Johnson Mountain Township on Wednesday when she ran into the moose.

The Morning Sentinel reports that Payne swerved in an attempt to avoid the animal and her vehicle ended up in a ditch. She was taken by ambulance to Jackman Region Health Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The moose had previously been struck by a pickup truck driven by Arthur Pierce of Gardiner. He was not hurt.

The yearling moose died.
