FARMINGTON — An ATV accident on a popular recreation trail sent a father and son to Franklin Memorial Hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Brian Dunton, 36, and his 9-year-old son, of Winslow, were injured when their Yamaha Grizzly all-terrain vehicle went off the trail in Farmington and into a tree. Both were wearing helmets, according to the Maine Warden Service.
The Whistle Stop Rail Trail is a 15-mile unpaved recreation trail that follows Route 4 between Jay and Farmington.
The Warden Service believes speed was a cause of the crash. In a statement, Maine Warden Kris MacCabe said that the pair’s helmets helped save them from more serious injuries.
Officials at Franklin Memorial Hospital said Brian Dunton was later transferred to Central Maine Medical Center. A CMMC official said Dunton’s condition was being evaluated Saturday night.
