DIXFIELD — Concerns over sewer rates and paving Porter Road were discussed at a selectmen’s meeting Monday night.
Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky informed the board that the sewer department was in the red for $132,782.
The board was told that $2,500 would be needed to pay to have sewer rates assessed and possibly increased to help pay the deficit.
Skibitsky said, “$157,655 comes from depreciation. We need to look at what we are going to do for capital.”
Skibitsky said there are funds to cover everyday costs for the department but the town needed money for emergency situations such as a pipe break.
The issue was tabled to the next meeting due to the absence of Selectmen Katherine Harvey and Bob Withrow.
Skibitsky also informed the board there was an issue with improvements on Porter Road.
“The crew was lifting up catch basins to grade and realized they had to raise them more than normal,” Skibitsky said. “There was some concern that the road wasn’t paved right.”
Skibitsky said after an engineer evaluated the road and discussed with Bruce Manzer, who did the initial paving, that more tar was needed on the crown of the road. Manzer advised Skibitsky he would fix it.
In other news, Cheryl Dixon was appointed to the Med-Care board on condition that an alternate would also be appointed. Selectmen said they would continue to look for one.
Selectman Steve Donahue said he would approach Harvey and Withrow about being the alternate.
Police Chief Richard A. Pickett said Anne Simmons-Edmunds would be graduating from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy on Dec. 16 and he invited selectmen to attend the ceremony in Vassalboro.
Pickett also advised the board he had received several applications for the newly created patrol position through the COPS grant. Pickett asked that a hiring committee be formed to help decide on the best applicant.
Selectmen Norine Clarke and Malcom Gill said they would be interested in being on that committee.
