PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The airport in Maine’s largest city is the state’s first to get full-body scanners.
The Transportation Security Administration on Monday demonstrated the new passenger screening equipment at the Portland International Airport, where three of the machines will be in use by week’s end.
The full-body scanners can detect explosives and other threats, and there have been modifications to newer versions of the machines to answer travelers’ privacy concerns.
So far, the TSA has deployed approximately 540 advanced imaging technology units at more than 100 airports across the country. The agency plans to install the machines at all airports.
