A judge sentenced a Topsham woman to nearly three years in federal prison for embezzling more than $500,000 from a Brunswick credit union.
Marsha Richard, 42, worked at Atlantic Federal Credit Union where she engaged in a scheme to steal her employer’s money by manipulating accounting entries for checks that credit union members had deposited, but had been returned for insufficient funds. Instead of crediting the appropriate internal account, Richard credited accounts of family members or friends or other accounts to which she had access, then accessed the diverted money herself, according to court records. She continued that practice from November, 2004 to October, 2010.
U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby sentenced Richard to 33 months in prison in Portland. He also sentenced her a five-year-term of probation. She had pleaded guilty to the charge on Sept. 23.
