My husband and I were born during the Depression. When my husband was in high school, he excelled in his studies and decided he wanted to go to college. His parents could not afford it, so he joined the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
He applied to a college in Indiana and started college as soon as he was discharged. He received his degree in engineering in less than three years.
Our children went to college also; two are engineers, one is an accountant and the other builds ships at Bath Iron Works. The grandchildren also went to college, are in college or planning to go to college.
Does that make us “snobs,” as one presidential candidate described us?
We gave back to our communities in many ways, as our children are doing.
I hope members of Congress will listen. The GI Bill made it all possible and it is needed again for all the returning servicemen who have been fighting to save our freedom.
