OTISFIELD — A 65-year-old man suffered chest and leg injuries Saturday afternoon when his single-engine plane crashed into the ice on Pleasant Lake in Otisfield, police said.
James Schaff of Gray was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he was being treated, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.
“Schaff’s float plane struck the ice nose first after he attempted to take off from the lake where he has a residence,” McCausland said.
The incident occurred just after noon.
Schaff freed himself from the wreckage on the middle of the lake and waited for nearby residents and rescue crews, McCausland said.
He said efforts were under way to remove the aircraft from the ice.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause.
Responders included Maine State Police troopers, the Maine Warden Service, Oxford County deputy sheriffs and the Otisfield Fire Department.
