PERU — Robert and Wilma Hartford are holding an open house at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, for lawmakers and the public to meet them, tour their home and learn how energy efficiency cut their heating bill in half.
The Hartfords were recently featured in a front-page news story in the New York Times, putting a face to the real and growing heating crisis in Maine.
Within a week of the story being published, more than $200,000 in donations poured in to the Hartford’s oil dealer, Hometown Energy.
Additionally, Joshua Wojcik, president of Upright Frameworks, and DeWitt Kimball, owner of Complete Home Evaluation Services, went to the Hartfords’ home at 38 West Main St. They did an energy audit, and buttoned up the home, cutting the Hartford’s oil consumption in half permanently, Wojcik said Tuesday morning in a report.
Gov. Paul LePage was invited along with lawmakers, but will be out of state.
Donations will be accepted to aid efficiency projects for LIHEAP-eligible families in the region.
